“Never Mind” by Perry Thompson

Never mind
that the light stabs the eye
bright, bright
white light sears vision
brands the retina
with the streaky signature of Glory
hot sunsilver singes my soul

never mind

I am a young poet for whom all joys are fresh
and all pains novel
and however bright that silver lining
to know it truly
I must find its dark cloud

never mind

I have the ear to hear
the footsteps of shadow on flame
the smell of future purple
the shape of vanilla
I will wrest the living heart
from the breast of empty
oblivious to reason

never mind

There was an old man from Nantucket

never mind

This poetry thing eludes me

never mind

Perry Thompson is a San Diego-based poet.
