“In Time” by Dan Grossman

Naomi Grossman at one of Carmel’s many mndfckng roundabouts

In Time

I’m sitting with my daughter Naomi
in the kitchen, explaining the plot
of the Richard Linklater film Boyhood

and how its scenes were filmed as much
as 12 years apart. So you follow
the boy actor as he grows up.

It’s still dark outside, but it’s almost time
for me to walk Naomi to the bus
for Carmel Middle School. I blink.

Now we’re in my car, at Cool Creek Park:
I’m explaining Linklater’s “Before” trilogy
as we wait for the photographer

who will take Naomi’s senior photos.
In time, she’ll find out
why these films ring so true to me.

Dan will sign copies of his book Mindfucking Roundabouts of Carmel, Indiana: Poems and Short Prose at Tomorrow Bookstore at 882 Massachusetts Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46204 from 11 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 5.
